Russell believed that envy could be a driving force behind the movement of savings and had to be endured to achieve the “follow the Joneses” system. It is difficult to defend either of the first two possibilities on the basis of the evidence of use available to us. Jealousy and envy are often used to indicate that a person is desirable for something someone else has, but jealousy carries the special feeling of “zealous vigilance” and tends to apply exclusively to feelings of protection regarding one`s own benefits or attachments. In the realm of romance, this is more common than envy.
If you said, “Your salt shaker collection fills me with jealousy,” most people would want to say the same thing as “Your salt shaker collection fills me with envy.” But if someone makes a naughty comment about your partner, you probably say it caused jealousy, not envy. Example: Other people`s perfectly curated social media feeds often arouse envy, but we have to keep in mind that they don`t show the whole story of someone`s life – just the highlights.
